Carolina Beach police continue a death investigation for a Maryland man found unresponsive in the waters near the marina. (Port City Daily photo / Google)

CAROLINA BEACH — Police are still investigating the death of a Maryland sailboater found dead in the waters near the marina over the weekend.

According to the Carolina Beach Police Department, the man was found around 8:20 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, March 3. First responders including the town’s police and fire units, along with New Hanover County Medical Center EMS responded to the marina area and located an unresponsive man in the water off the end of Lees Lane.

The man was identified as Michael Warren Thomas, a 56-year-old male from Columbia, Maryland.

According to police, “a witness informed investigators Mr. Thomas traveled to Carolina Beach by sailboat. The witness additionally advised Mr. Thomas did not return to his boat the night before as expected.”

The Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet made an official determination of the cause of death. According to police, no foul play is suspected, although the investigation remains ongoing. Police said they had no further information to release.
